who we are
In 2021 after a historic visionary BIPOC retreat in Tarapoto, Peru Lama Rod Owens and Spring Washam began discussing a visionary project in Georgia. After a year and half of discussions in 2023 Spring Washam relocated to Atlanta Georgia to begin working on founding The Spirit Underground Liberation Church and The Spirit Underground Liberation Project.
SPRING WASHAM
Considered a pioneer in bringing mindfulness-based meditation practices to diverse communities, Spring Washam is a well-known teacher, healer, and visionary leader based in Oakland, California.
She is the author of A Fierce Heart: Finding Strength, Courage and Wisdom in Any Moment and The Spirit of Harriet Tubman: Awakening from the Underground.
LAMA ROD OWENS
Known as the Black Buddhist Southern Queen—and a highly sought-after Buddhist minister, author, activist, yoga instructor, and authorized Lama in the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism—Lama Rod Owens is an international influencer.
He has a Master of Divinity degree in Buddhist Studies from Harvard Divinity School, focusing on the intersection of social change, identity, and spiritual practice.
